Converse's line of Run Star Motion/Hike is playful, distorted, and makes way for a future of movement. I wanted to take this concept further with an urban landscape, exaggerated lines, and sharp shadows to make a cinematic motion piece. The goal was to capture the nostalgia of this iconic sneaker while also showing it's innovation.

I spent three sessions collecting all the footage I needed for this project. Day 0 was mostly to physically visit the locations I'd previously scouted out on Google Earth, to make sure they were viable, along with testing out some shot ideas. Since my models were only available for Day 2, I left the planned shots I had for that session, and used Day 1 to experiment, and gather as much footage as possible as the sole photographer and model.

Takeaways

Unlocking and refining new skills.

  • Text tracking was a fresh technique I'd just learned in class, and being able to apply that to this project was very rewarding (albeit, frustrating).

  • Film and photography are mediums that I only have an amateur understanding of, so it was a welcome challenge to create something of this scale on my own. It was a humbling experience, and I would love to explore it further.

Miscellaneous

  • Never underestimate the rendering time of 4K video…

  • The sun sets quickly in Rochester, NY!

Room for growth.

  • If I were to do this again, I would put more energy into pushing my limits with compositing, color grading, and utilizing 3D camera techniques more.

  • Adding more frame by frame animations and illustrations.

  • Kill your darlings, and cut more footage (some shots are too long).
